Underground Coal Mine Experience

Underground Coal Mine Experience

Step into the depths and find out what it was like to work an underground coal mine in the 1950’s.

Step back in time and embark on a thrilling journey into the depths of Collie’s coal mining history with our incredible Replica Underground Coal Mine Experience located at the Collie Visitor Centre and find out what it was like to work underground in the 1950’s. The Replica Mine was constructed in 1983 by the Collie Rotary Club to commemorate the centenary of the discovery of coal and has recently undergone an upgrade thanks to the state government to make the experience even more interesting.

  • Simulated Coal Blast: Set off a blast complete with loud noise and a trembling platform. It’s like you’re really there!
  • Educational Insights: The experience sheds light on various aspects of mining life, including the roles of pit ponies, the camaraderie among miners, and the tools and techniques employed underground.
  • Family-Friendly Activities: Children can engage in interactive elements, such as searching for hidden critters within the mine and completing a mini treasure hunt making the experience both educational and entertaining for younger visitors.

Guided Tours:

  • Guided tours led by former miner are available via booking through the Collie Visitor Centre. These tours provide personal anecdotes and firsthand accounts of life in the mines.
  • Minimum groups of 4, maximum groups of 15.
  • Must be booked 2 weeks in advanced.
  • Duration: 1 Hour
  • Please note our guides are volunteers so Guided Tours are dependent on their availability.  Please phone the Visitor Centre on 9734 2051 on weekdays to book a Guided Tour.
