Trails, blooms, and sunny escapes in Collie’s Djilba season

In the Noongar six-season calendar, Djilba is the season of growth and renewal, often associated with the first blooms of wildflowers and the lifting of winter’s chill.

Noongar Six season calendar

The six Noongar seasons in Western Australia’s South West region are guided by the indications in nature. The noongar people traditionally hunted and gathered with the guidance of these seasons, which indicated when local flora and fauna were plentiful.

The Six Seasons are:
  • Birak (December – January)
  • Bunuru (February – March)
  • Djeran (April – May)
  • Makuru (June – July)
  • Djilba (August – September)
  • Kambarang (October – November)

The Collie region is an absolute hotspot for native blooms. While hiking out on the trails in Collie, you’ll spot a stunning variety of native wildflower species, from orchids to everlastings and kangaroo paws to grevilleas. Here are some local Collie favourites for the best wildflower displays:

Wellington National Park

Wellington National Park covers 17,000 hectares of forest and it comes alive in Djilba with blooming displays of over 300 species of native wildflowers. It’s also a great time to spot local wildlife like the Chuditch, Quenda, and even the elusive Brushtail Possum!

Karak (Red Tail) Trail, Collie

Westralia Orchid Loop

Take a step onto the Westralia Orchid Loop and let the surrounding bushland work its magic. Winding across the Darling Plateau, this trail weaves through precious conservation land where rare plants flourish and threatened wildlife find refuge. Every step invites you to soak in the forest’s beauty — the rustle of leaves overhead, the scent of wildflowers, and the quiet presence of nature all around.
