About the Trail

The construction of the 186 kilometre Collie-Narrogin Railway, which includes the Collie-Darkan section, started in 1904 from Narrogin, with the line from Collie beginning two years later. By September 1906, the railway was up and running from Narrogin to Darkan, and the entire line to Collie was completed by October 1908. This railway was very important for the area’s development, as it made it easier to transport coal from Collie and agricultural goods from surrounding areas. It played a key role in the economic growth of towns like Darkan, which was officially established as a town in December 1906. Today, the old railway line has been turned into the Collie-Darkan Rail Trail, showcasing historic railway stations, renovated rail bridges, and beautiful views of farmland and forests.
