Ready to see some seriously big machinery in action (and out of action)? Just 16km east of Collie along the Coalfields Highway, the Coalfields Mine Lookout & Coal Shovel is the ultimate roadside stop for curious minds and mini adventurers. Here, you can check out a giant 900-tonne P&H electric shovel and take in sweeping views over an active open-cut coal mine — all in one spot.
The Coalfields Mine Lookout in Collie offers a stunning view over the large open-cut coal mine that has played a big part in the town’s history. From this lookout, you can see the size and scale of the mining operation and how it has shaped the landscape. It’s a great spot to learn about Collie’s mining heritage and take in the view.
Donated by Premier Coal and lovingly restored by the Collie Rotary Club, this towering shovel once worked the local coalfields and now stands proudly on display. It’s a favourite with kids (think: biggest sandpit toy ever) and a great way to connect with Collie’s proud mining heritage. Don’t forget to pop into the Collie Visitor Centre first, the friendly team will help you find it on the map and give you the inside scoop.
