4WD Etiquette and Safety Tips
We’re all for a good time out here, but it’s even better when everyone gets home safely and the tracks stay open for all to enjoy.
Here’s how to play it safe and respect the bush:
Know before you go
Track status can change so check local conditions via DBCA or the Collie Visitor Centre before heading out.
- Talk to a Local – Swing by the Collie Visitor Centre for maps, tips, and the latest trail updates.
- Only drive 4WD tracks in a suitable 4WD vehicle with low-range gearing and good clearance.
Be prepared
- Fuel Up First – Top up your tank in town before hitting the trail as some routes have no fuel stops.
- Bring recovery gear (snatch straps, rated shackles, tyre deflator, compressor, shovel).
Let someone know your plans as there’s limited to no mobile reception out here.
Travel with a mate if you can – two vehicles are better than one in a sticky situation.
Drive with respect
Stick to the designated trail – no bush-bashing or off-track detours.
Keep tyre pressures low on rough sections to avoid damage (and make the ride comfier).
Yield to uphill traffic and keep left when passing.
Leave no trace
Take all rubbish with you – if you brought it in, take it out.
Don’t drive through water unnecessarily – it damages the track and the ecosystem.
Respect wildlife, other drivers, and the peace of the bush.
